About

Welcome to Threshold

Threshold Psychotherapy is an association of psychotherapy trainees offering therapy to individuals online and face-to-face in the North West.

We share a commitment to thoughtful, reflective practice and to offering safe, confidential spaces where all parts of a person’s experience are welcome — whether painful, uncertain, hidden, or just beginning to take shape.

Our Ethos

Each therapist brings their own training, background, and style of working. All are engaged in ongoing professional development and appropriate supervision. Whatever brings you to therapy — longstanding patterns, recent difficulties, or a search for clarity — you can expect care, seriousness of purpose, and respect for your individual experience.

Low-cost Therapy

The therapists advertising through Threshold Psychotherapy are trainees working under supervision. As a result, sessions are often offered at a lower fee than is typical in private practice. Fees are set individually by each therapist.

Locations

Therapists advertising through Threshold Psychotherapy see clients face-to-face in Heaton Chapel, Deansgate, and online.

Each therapist practises independently and is responsible for their own clinical work, professional membership, supervision, and insurance.

Process

Finding a psychotherapist can be a daunting process, especially if you have not spoken with one before. It can take some time to find a therapist who feels like a good fit - each person is different. The following sections explain our process and what to expect at each stage.

Therapy process: Reaching out

Initial Contact

"Reaching Out"

This is the first step, via the contact form on this website. You can briefly share what’s bringing you to therapy or simply say you'd like to talk. Your prospective therapist will respond within a couple of days and find a mutually agreeable slot for an introductory call.

Therapy process: Introductory call

Introductory Call

"A short, informal conversation"

For the introductory call, your therapist will contact you for a phone conversation of around 15 minutes. This is a chance for you and your therapist to connect briefly, answer any initial questions, and get a feel for whether working together might be a good fit. There's no pressure or commitment.

If you and your therapist decide to work together your therapist will send you the welcome documents, which will contain a brief questionnaire, working agreement, mutual expectations and payment information. You and your therapist will find a regular time to meet, either online or face-to-face. The initial frequency of appointments will be agreed at this point.

Therapy process: Assessment

Assessment

"Beginning to get a sense of things"

The work will enter a period of assessment, which normally lasts for 4-6 appointments. This is a longer conversation where you and your therapist explore what has brought you to therapy, what changes you would like to make in your life, and how we might be able to work together towards those goals.

Sessions in this period are likely to focus on building a mutual connection, while seeking some sense of your situation, both in the present and in your past.

Therapy process: Ongoing therapy

Ongoing Therapy

"The main therapeutic work"

Regular sessions begin and you and your therapist enter an ongoing therapeutic contract. You and your therapist work together at a pace that feels manageable and meaningful, exploring thoughts, feelings, behaviours, patterns, and possibilities. This stage is collaborative, flexible, and about working to produce agreed changes.

Therapy process: Closing

Closing

"Ending well"

When the time is right, we’ll plan for an ending together. This might happen naturally over time, or be a more structured piece of work. The aim is to reflect on what’s changed, what’s been learned, and what comes next.

You may be coming with a specific issue — or with a sense of being held back by unhelpful thoughts, painful feelings, or difficult behaviours. Even if life looks ‘fine’ from the outside, it may not feel so good from the inside.

Common questions at the start of therapy

  • Do your relationships follow repeating patterns?
  • Do you keep finding yourself in unpleasant situations?
  • Are you struggling to cope with adverse events?
  • Do you struggle to control your behaviour?
  • Do you suffer from sudden states of anger or fear?
  • Do you struggle to contain your feelings?
  • Do you wish you felt differently about situations?
  • Do you struggle with your sexual or gender identity?
  • Are you troubled by thoughts, dreams or fantasies (sexual/non-sexual)?
  • Do you find yourself being pulled back into difficult things from your past?
  • Are you struggling to process feelings from a toxic relationship?
  • Do you worry you might be bringing toxicity to your relationships?
  • Do you try hard, but never seem to succeed?
  • Are you always in a rush? Are things ever good enough? Are you constantly let down by other people?
  • Do you find yourself living old feelings?
  • Do you find yourself putting other people first?
  • Do you find yourself trying to hold things together, yet feel no one really sees or knows you?
  • Are you successful on paper, but unable to achieve intimate relationships?
  • Does something about your life feel intolerable?
  • Are you coping with grief or illness?
  • Have you recently had bad news?

Talking to friends or family can be helpful, but sometimes these relationships are part of what maintains the difficulty — or they simply don’t offer the safety or depth you need to really examine the situation. That’s when it’s time to talk to someone impartial.

I offer a free initial online or phone consultation. You are very welcome to get in touch with a question or to arrange a time to speak.

My belief is that life is about pursuing vitality while maintaining our capacity for introspection and curiosity. Together, we will form a therapeutic alliance that is focused on finding meaningful and lasting solutions.

Before becoming a therapist, I worked on medical and scientific software and carried out academic research in the fields of psychology, robotics, and artificial intelligence.

I am a Trainee Psychotherapist, currently a student member of the BACP and a Transactional Analysis Psychotherapy Trainee (UKATA), working under clinical supervision. I am also recognised by IARTT to practice the Rewind trauma technique. I see clients face-to-face in Deansgate, Heaton Chapel (Stockport) and online.

Lauren King

Lauren King

Hello, I'm Lauren.

I am a psychotherapist in training working in Transactional Analysis (TA), and I am endorsed to practice. I offer both face-to-face short-term and long-term counselling in the Manchester area, as well as online.

Whether you are struggling with something specific or looking to better understand yourself, I aim to create a safe, confidential, and non-judgemental space where you are welcomed to talk freely and feel supported as you explore whatever's on your mind. You might feel stuck, lost, or unsure of how to move forward. At times, this can be the result of circumstances beyond our control; other times, it may come from being caught in familiar patterns of behaviour. Through therapy, we can work to change how we relate to these challenges—shifting the way we think about them and exploring new ways of responding. I believe that gaining greater awareness of how the past influences the present can open the door to emotional growth, deeper understanding, and meaningful change.

I have worked with those involved in the Criminal Justice System for over fifteen years in both the charity and public sector, including as a qualified Probation Officer. My approach is grounded in empathy, compassion, and a strong belief in each person's capacity for change.

I offer a free 20-minute introductory call where we can get to know each other a little more. This gives you the opportunity to discuss the reasons why you've come to therapy and to ask me any questions that you might have about how therapy works and what can be expected during our sessions.

I am a student member of the BACP and UKATA, working under supervision.

Whilst I prefer to work face-to-face, I am able to offer and facilitate online work too.
